Known locally as Tis Issat, meaning 'smoking water,' the Blue Nile Falls is one of Africa's most dramatic natural spectacles. Located just 30 kilometers downstream from Bahir Dar, the falls span the entire width of the Blue Nile during the rainy season, creating a thundering cascade that sends plumes of mist hundreds of meters into the air — visible from miles away. The walk to the falls takes you through lush countryside dotted with traditional thatched villages, across a 17th-century Portuguese stone bridge, and along paths where colobus monkeys play in the canopy above. During the dry season, while the volume decreases, the falls reveal fascinating rock formations and create dozens of smaller cascades that sparkle in the sunlight. Our guided tours from Felege Ghion Resort include transportation, an experienced local guide, and a traditional picnic lunch overlooking the gorge. The best time to visit is from June to September when the rains swell the river to its most impressive flow, though the falls remain beautiful year-round. The surrounding area is also home to diverse birdlife, including the rare White-cheeked Turaco and the Blue-headed Coucal, making it a rewarding destination for nature lovers as well.
