Lake Tana is not only the largest lake in Ethiopia but also a sacred landscape dotted with some twenty island monasteries, many of which date back to the 14th century or earlier. Accessible only by traditional reed boat called a tankwa, these islands are sanctuaries of faith, art, and history. The most renowned among them include Kibran Gabriel, where only men are permitted to enter, and Ura Kidane Mehret, whose circular church is adorned with some of the finest examples of Ethiopian ecclesiastical art anywhere in the country. The murals depict scenes from the Old and New Testaments with a distinctly Ethiopian aesthetic — dark-skinned saints, local flora, and stories that have been passed down through centuries. Many monasteries also house remarkable collections of illuminated manuscripts, processional crosses, and ecclesiastical crowns. A visit from Gorgora Eco Resort by boat takes you through papyrus-lined channels where hippos sometimes surface, past fishermen casting their nets as their ancestors have for generations, and into a world that feels untouched by time. We recommend setting aside a full day for the monastery tour, as each island offers its own unique treasures and stories.
